TaskRabbit is one of the easiest platforms to start with. You sign up as a Tasker, list your skills (errands, organizing, laundry, simple handyman work, etc.), and pick up jobs in your area.
A few tips to stand out:
Set your rate at $35+. Don’t lowball yourself. I hire from TaskRabbit all the time, and I often skip over the cheapest options. I’m looking for someone skilled and professional—not just the cheapest name on the list.
Opt into Same Day tasks. These keep momentum going and can help you get discovered faster.
Communicate well. A quick message like “On my way,” or “Picked up your item, see you at 2 PM,” makes a big difference.
Look professional. That doesn’t mean dressy—it means appropriate. Don’t show up to garden in heels. Show up looking like someone you’d want to hire.
Chase 5-star reviews. Those unlock better gigs and better pay.
Instawork and Airtasker work similarly. People post jobs—like help with event setup, moving, or household work—with a specific budget. You apply. If you’re available and capable, you get the job.
It’s simple: someone posts, “Need help with setup for a small event—$100 for two hours.” You say yes, show up, do a great job, and get paid. Fast, flexible, and solid if you don’t want long-term commitment.
Pro Tip: These platforms reward speed, professionalism, and consistency. Just like TaskRabbit, make sure your profile is polished, your response time is fast, and your attitude is solid.
Mobile gift wrapping is my thing—year-round. If you’re detail-oriented and like working with your hands, it’s a fantastic side business.
Yes, I teach classes. Yes, they’re worth it. But even if you’re just getting started, this is one of those creative skills that people will pay for when it’s done well. And once you learn how to market yourself, that skill becomes leverage in any side hustle.
Want something seasonal that works fast? Let me tell you what I tested last fall.
I tried a Porch Pumpkin setup. I made a Shopify store just for it, printed flyers on orange paper with simple pricing, and walked them around a high-end neighborhood. One said:
“Local widow offering porch pumpkin displays—includes setup and pickup.”
I got a call within 24 hours. She bought a package, and then hired me again for her son’s birthday party.
I got paid, made a connection, and picked up a new skill.
Pro Tip: These platforms reward speed, professionalism, and consistency. Just like TaskRabbit, make sure your profile is polished, your response time is fast, and your attitude is solid.
Final Thoughts
If you're over 50, your experience is your advantage. You've got life skills, people skills, and (let’s be honest) better judgment than most. These aren’t gimmicks. They’re low-barrier, flexible ways to bring in cash and keep building.
Launch and learn. Try something. Reflect on it. Improve the next time.
You don’t need perfect. You need action.
